Improving the commissioning of healthcare
Successful commissioners in the new patient-led NHS need to harness the opportunities provided by patient choice, payment by results, and practice-based commissioning to secure improved health outcomes for an ageing population that is increasingly burdened by long-term conditions.
Our capabilities
Our parent company, UnitedHealth Group, purchases healthcare for some 70 million people, and contracts with over 5000 hospitals and 560,000 doctors. In the UK we are working to improve commissioning for 2.5.million people.
Our services
UH UK can provide commissioners with varying degrees of support from analytical tools with training and consultancy services, through to working in partnership to manage parts of the commissioning process on either an interim or long-term basis.
In each case we can bring the range of tools that we consider essential to effective commissioning:
- Data tools provision and data analysis
- Practice based commissioning data tools for budget setting and actuarial design of risk pools and incentive overlays and facilitating consortia development to gain maximum benefits for patients and redesigned services
- Hospital contracting methods, with audit of coding, utilisation and clinical practice
- Health equity auditing
- Elective care demand management
- Emergency care redesign including out of hours and strategies for encouraging more care in the community
- Profiling primary care performance
- Medicines management
- Skill mix redesign at the primary/secondary care interface
- Patient and consumer engagement
- Strategies for changing clinical practice including clinical decision support methods
- Turnaround help with rapid development of plans
